There's no shortage of online predictions about what is going to happen when Art Basel Miami opens, so, I'm not going to make any. However, in the past this has been a terrific event and this year will be no exception. Some previous buyers may not be returning and sales may be down slightly, but it's still the place to be. If you have an interest in contemporary art make sure you're in Miami this December.

Art Basel Miami is rapidly approaching so it's time to start planning. In addition to the big fair located at the Miami Beach Convention Center, be sure to visit some of the other art fairs. Last year, the satellite fairs provided trendous visual treats and museum quality works. Visit them and you'll see talented, established and emerging artists represented by top teir art galleries from around the world. Local museums and galleries are also planning special events and parties. If you're interested in visual art, the first week of December you should be in Miami.

This art fair features 44 galleries, with a strong representation of west coast dealers especially Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles. You'll also find several other hotel art fairs within walking distance, plan on spending a whole day looking at art fairs on Collins Avenue.

Shuttles will run between each Bridge Fair locations 12pm-10pm daily. On July 14th, we were told that Geisai Miami would be back for 2008. Six years since the first inception of GEISAI in Japan in the summer of 2001, this is the American debut of a fair that has been a launch pad into the art world for many emerging artists. Artist are selected by jury and not charged a fee. Last year the fair was hosted by the Pulse Art Fair and they were located in the same complex, no details about this year’s location but most likely the same.

Cremata Fine Art hosts the work of Raúl Cremata, an arts activist and collector. Mr. Cremata has been a constant presence in South Florida’s visual arts community for more than twenty five years. His latest exhibition continues many of the artistic concerns that have become his signature: tropical light and color, Caribbean architecture and exuberant flora. A new gestural ease and sense of line is present in this work.

Margaret Clifton observes that “the light and atmosphere of the tropic continues to be the aesthetic concern for Raúl Cremata.” She adds: “The now-marchand faces his memories of Miami’s late seventies and eighties and his artistic coexistence with Amelia Peláez, Bermúdez, Emilio Sánchez and Mariano. Cremata finds new life in the chromatic vitality of his pictorial expression.”

The Parisian critic goes to the heart of Mr. Cremata’s identity. “For the painter, the intensity of the color of the tropic, the medio punto, the Caribbean colonial interiors are not product of a recently acquired cultural awareness, a trip to Cuba or a salsa record. This is not ‘a Buena Vista Social Club phenomenon.’ Raul Cremata, from his childhood and youth in Manhattan has been involved in serious probe of the Cuban visual arts, his traditions, and his country’s connections with European modernism. Far from nostalgia, we have found here a true celebration of place and a well thought out sense of identity.”

Mr. Cremata's work appears in many of South Florida's important collections including that of Emilio and Gloria Estefan and Florida International University.

Centro Cultural Español - Coral GablesSantiago Espeche / Tears from the Thaw

Tears from the Thaw is the latest of a series of great impact compositions by Santiago Espeche, created from images obtained by Argentinean satellite SAC-C and manipulated with a special software. The show reports in a subtle way the effects of climatic change in the Argentinean Antarctica.

“For this series I choose a metaphoric form to discuss thaw, a very difficult issue, as one of the effects of global warming. I like to do it in a subtle way”, say Espeche, the son of a diplomatic couple born in Rome. “I was analyzing satellite images for months and found rich palettes that lead me to believe that there was art to be exploited. The variety in tones gives me the variety of the floor, from its topography as the energy that elements irradiate”. Espeche’s relationship with “satellite art” began soon after he started working as an administrative for the National Commission of Space Activities (CONAE, in Spanish).

Tears from the thaw will feature images in photo paper and vinyl and a video work with the launch of the SAC-C satellite and images taken in Antarctica and other places in 2000. Related to the exhibition there will be the screening of the documentaries Atrapados en el fin del mundo (Trapped at the End of the world), by Eduardo Sanchez on Tuesday, May 6th at 7:00 p.m. and The Thin Green Line on Tuesday May 13th at 7:00 p.m.

Maria-Jose Arjona will be performing "Untitled" from The White series at Gallery Diet on Saturday, March 15th. The press release indicates from 11 am - 5 pm.

The "white series" encompasses a group of performances were the body redefines and frees the experience of the world from the traditional definition given by words and the use of language in order to communicate that same experience. It poses more than an answer, multiple questions from where performance and beyond performance, the body is called to open new avenues for interpretation and understanding of sensory stimuli, to further create a language with the capability to communicate beyond identity or specific stereotypes.

Carol Jazzar Contemporary Art is proud to present Place in Space, an exhibition of sculptural installation, drawing and animation by Miami luminary Jen Stark. This will be Stark's first solo show with the gallery for which the works will be specifically realized.

A testament to process and patience, her sculptures are remarkably simple and ultimately irresistible. Using only paper, an X-acto knife, and glue, Stark succeeds in creating intricate and intelligent sculptures that reveal to us how remarkable a material like paper can become. They exemplify the contrast between exterior and interior and in-between the voids of white and intoxicating myriads of vivid color, often arranged in geometrically mesmerizing configurations, we find a little magic about the world.

This series of work is inspired by the unseen potential of common things. Here Stark deals with the transformation of simple objects, imbuing them with a dimension and meaning hither-to unattained. "The forms and concepts are inspired by the mysteries that lay at the bottom of the ocean and at the edges of the universe. The results resound with ideas of replication and infinity - echoing patterns and intelligent designs found in nature."

Like most great discoveries, Stark's practice is one of chance and circumstance but the limitless potential and energy that she gives to her creations is borne of her unique ability to reconcile the serious business of art making with the fun that it regularly affords - a feat few artists have mastered. The works on view will be bigger than anything previously seen, their sheer scale (and accompanying technical considerations inherent with her practice) make this perhaps Stark's most ambitious undertaking to date.

Jen Stark is a 2008 recipient of the prestigious South Florida Cultural Consortium's Visual and Media Artists Fellowship.

Artist Giselle Delgado unveils the first part of what will be exhibited during arteaméricas 2008, in a perfomance that combines projected images, music, and where she will be, once again, giving out pins of the very much talked about LATIN AMERICAN ART IS HOT campaign that was created by her and Emilio Calleja, vicepresident of arteaméricas.

In this work, called ART.VERTISING 1, Giselle is erasing the thin line between art and advertising, by converting arteaméricas’ advertising campaign into a work of art, full of expression of her duality of living and being a creator in both worlds and the change of perception that people have when it’s art and when it’s advertising. (a mural of mixed media will be ehibited in arteaméricas). It also depicts how we are all guilty of manipulating and being willfully manipulated by others. All the photographs taken of people wearing the LATIN IS HOT button, since Art Basel, throughout all the art events in Miami, up until now, will be part of her work.

Also, to prove that both worlds CAN co-exist, she virtually hired a ficticious character, “Super-Woman” created by a well-known latin american artist, to “work” promoting Latin American Art Is Hot. Together, Superwoman, and Giselle Delgado, will have a collaborative piece at the fair, as well as a very interesting perfomance on Saturday March 8, at the Wynwood Gallery Night, between Praxis Gallery and Photo Lab. 7-10pm.

The Moore SpaceFrench Kissin in the U.S.A.

This is the last week to see the exhibition at The Moore Space. French Kissin in the U.S.A. will be ending on March 8th.
Faces - A Project by Carlos Amorales also ends on Saturday.

Taking its title from a 1986 hit song by Blondie, FRENCH KISSIN' IN THE USA presents eighteen (18) contemporary artists belonging to the emerging art scene in France. This exhibition highlights a selection of artists in parallel projects, more in a laboratory fashion than as a concept or style-driven exhibition. Their work reflects visual production that is largely multi-disciplinary, exploring subjects and matters as diverse as the relationship between art and philosophy, music and film; the dependency of concept to form; appropriated images and the dialogue between form and architecture.

Carolina Sardi’s works are delicate forms made from steel. Each work is ‘designed’, transferred to metal and then colored with enamel.

Jorge Luis Santos is a young Cuban abstract painter. His mainly large abstract canvases are easily recognized by his unique use of color, preferably in dark and wide brushstrokes.

Tomas Espina's work is characterized by the use of gunpowder. He ‘draws’ with gunpowder in canvas and later ignites it. Also on display a video showing the artist during the process of making a piece.

Bernice Steinbaum Gallery / Luis Cruz Azaceta

A new exhibition of artworks by Luis Cruz Azaceta opened a few days ago at the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery in Miami. The exhibition will continue until March 1st.

The work in this exhibition "Museum Plans" is a body of work that Azaceta has been doing for about two years – exploring new territories and looking towards the museum as subject. A museum where space and strategies come together to formulate a plan for the viewer’s perception and consciousness; a cultural container that toys, elicits, and moves one’s thoughts and placement.

For this exhibition at the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, he has included work that deals with the plans of the gallery space.

NY Times - Article about Art in Miami

"Since Art Basel Miami Beach touched down on this city’s palm and condo strewn shores six years ago, a contemporary art wave has swept across Miami like a tropical storm. Art is everywhere, from the walls of boutique hotels where works by young art stars have replaced the stark minimalism of the 1990s." This is one of the statements in Julia Chaplin's article about the Miami art scene, published: February 3, 2008, in the Travel section of the New York Times.

The article is very good and talks about the growth and importance of art in Miami. Art Basel Miami Beach is briefly discussed as well as its affect on Miami. It covers what’s going on in the Wynwood Art District, mentions several of the big private collections, art galleries and museums. I'm not going to recap the article but wanted to bring it to your attention.
